The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant The Necessity of Forgiveness The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant Matthew 18:21-35 What is forgiveness? Why should I forgive? How can I forgive?

Context… Peter’s Question Matthew 18:21–22 21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Context… Jesus’ Parable Matthew 18:23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants… This parable is not a comprehensive guide to forgiveness. This parable emphasizes only the necessity to forgive.

What is forgiveness? Forgiveness assumes debt Matthew 18:23-25 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants… 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.

What is forgiveness? Forgiveness means canceling the debt Matthew 18:26-27 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.

What forgiveness is not. Forgiveness is not condoning what the person did. (See Matthew 18:15-20) Forgiveness does not always mean extending trust.

Why should I forgive? Matthew 18:28-31 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.

Why should I forgive? Matthew 18:32-35 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

Why should I forgive? Because I have been forgiven. Because it’s torture not to.

““It could not have been many seconds that he stood there—hand held out—but to me it seemed hours as I wrestled with the most difficult thing I had ever had to do. “For I had to do it—I knew that. The message that God forgives has a prior condition: that we forgive those who have injured us. ‘If you do not forgive men their trespasses,’ Jesus says, ‘neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.’ Corrie Ten Boom

“I knew it not only as a commandment of God, but as a daily experience “I knew it not only as a commandment of God, but as a daily experience. Since the end of the war I had had a home in Holland for victims of Nazi brutality. Those who were able to forgive their former enemies were able also to return to the outside world and rebuild their lives, no matter what the physical scars. Those who nursed their bitterness remained invalids. It was as simple and as horrible as that. Corrie Ten Boom

How can I forgive? Matthew 18:26-27 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. Pity: σπλαγχνίζομαι (splanchnizomai). vb. to have compassion, pity, deep empathy. Expresses having deep compassion. This verb is similar to what is expressed in modern language as a feeling in one’s “gut” or “heart” of deep empathy for another person.   Lexham Theological Wordbook. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press.

“Forgiveness flounders because I exclude the enemy from the community of humans even as I exclude myself from the community of sinners.” Mirsoslav Volf

“And still I stood there with the coldness clutching my heart “And still I stood there with the coldness clutching my heart. But forgiveness is not an emotion—I knew that too. Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart. ‘… Help!’ I prayed silently. ‘I can lift my hand. I can do that much. You supply the feeling.’ “And so woodenly, mechanically, I thrust my hand into the one stretched out to me. And as I did, an incredible thing took place. The current started in my shoulder, raced down my arm, sprang into our joined hands. And then this healing warmth seemed to flood my whole being, bringing tears to my eyes. “ ‘I forgive you, brother!’ I cried. ‘With all my heart!’ “For a long moment we grasped each other’s hands, the former guard and the former prisoner. I had never known God’s love so intensely, as I did then”. Corrie Ten Boom

How can I forgive? Receive and meditate on your forgiveness. Identify with your offender as a sinner. Cancel the debt.
