Ncfe Business and Communication The Methods of Communication

The Methods of Communication Objective: To understand why effective communication is essential in every business Success Criteria: I can define the terms dissemination, transmission and message path I can explain how information is exchanged in business I can analyse the effectiveness of different methods of communication

Who is the receiver in each of these situations? Business Annual Report Advert of New Product Employment Contact Customer Complaint Discuss 41 40 42 39 44 43 37 33 32 34 35 45 36 38 48 56 55 57 58 60 59 54 53 49 47 50 51 52 46 31 9 8 10 11 13 12 7 6 1 End 2 3 5 4 14 15 25 24 26 27 29 28 23 22 17 16 18 19 21 20 30 Mind map the different types on the board

Split your page into 4 & Give these headings: Written Communication Advantages Written Communication Disadvantages Verbal Advantages Verbal Disadvantages 40 39 41 43 44 38 42 37 33 32 34 35 36 45 46 56 55 57 58 60 59 54 53 48 47 49 50 52 51 31 29 9 8 10 11 13 12 7 6 1 End 2 3 5 4 14 15 24 23 25 26 28 27 22 21 17 16 18 19 20 30

must look good or it can give a bad impression it needs to be accurate as errors are easy to spot helps with difficult awkward situations as there is no contact It is fast and direct it is formal it may not be easy to hear/audible the person passing the message may not explain well it can take a long time to check through it can be referred to later you have a record of the communication it can be copied for others to read the tone of voice can be used to emphasize points it is not ideal for long, complicated messages must be legible (readable) you get immediate feedback from recipient body language and facial expressions can help with explanations there could be distractions while communicating could cause an argument no record that anything has been communicated TIP: work together to help you get through more. You don’t have to write it out in full, but just as much as you need to have the idea.

What method of written internal communication do you think that the managers of a business would use to inform their employees about these issues? You must justify your answer To invite a manager from another branch of the business to join them for lunch after a meeting (2 marks) To provide the results of some research to all the managers of the business. (2 marks) To inform all employees about a change to the car-parking arrangements at the office. (2 marks) To tell somebody they have a pay rise. (2 marks) To tell all employees the details of the forthcoming Christmas party. (2 marks)

Task: You have the rest of the lesson to communicate to at least one of these different groups of people using one of the following methods: Write a letter. Write a speech. 3. Produce a graph. 4. Produce an advert.

Scenarios: Choose 1 of these! Write a letter to a customer advising him/her that they have missed a repayment on their loan. HINT: Think about formalities and remind them of the consequences of not paying. Write a speech that a manager will have to make to staff in a factory informing them that due to financial constraints they will have to work for less pay and receive less holiday or otherwise face losing their jobs. HINT: Use your best persuasive language. Produce a graph, pie chart, line graph or similar method of displaying data to show your manager the sales figures of bottles of the energy drink NUTTER for the year ending 2014. HINT: you can make up the data, but specify the region of sales. Produce an advert for a new pair of trainers from the brand JUMP. The advert will be placed on billboards in urban centres. HINT: This is a market-driven product. Make sure that you tell the customer how buying the product will make them feel and change their lives for the better.

Plenary: Roll of a dice? For me communication is... Accurate communication in business is essential because... When writing business letters it is important to... because... When speaking to groups of staff it would be a good idea to... as... I prefer to display data using... because... “If I worked in advertising, I would need to lie to customers.” Discuss. 40 39 41 43 44 38 42 36 32 31 33 34 45 35 37 47 55 54 56 57 60 58 53 52 48 30 49 50 51 46 59 9 8 10 11 13 12 7 6 1 29 2 3 5 4 14 End 15 23 25 26 28 27 22 24 17 21 18 16 19 20 41 40 42 44 45 43 32 34 33 35 36 38 37 39 53 57 56 58 59 31 60 55 54 48 47 49 50 52 51 46 15 9 8 10 11 13 12 7 6 1 End 2 3 5 4 14 16 25 24 26 27 29 28 23 22 18 17 19 20 21 30
