Lesson 8.2.4 – Operations with Scientific Notation Quote of the Day – “Whenever you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on” Thomas Jefferson Objective - I will be able to write very large and very small numbers in Scientific Notation and I will be able to convert a number from Scientific Notation into standard form.

Scientific Notation: A method of writing very large and very small numbers, numbers containing a large number of zeros, using powers of ten. It allows long numbers to be written in a small space. Homework – “Writing in Scientific Notation” worksheet

Steps to converting from Standard Form to Scientific Notations Write the number to be changed leaving off any zeros that come before or after those digits which are greater than zero. Place a decimal point after the first digit which is greater than zero. Count the number of places that the decimal point was moved from its original location to its new location after the first digit greater than zero. Write a x10 after the number you wrote in step 1 Place as an exponent on the 10 which matches the number of places from step number 3 If the original number was greater than one the exponent on the 10 will be positive and if the original number was less then one the exponent on the 10 will be negative.

Steps to converting from Scientific Notation to Standard Form Write all of the digits before the x10 leaving out the decimal point. Move the decimal point from where it was after the first digit the same number of places as the exponent on the 10. The decimal point will move to the right if the exponent is positive and to the left if the exponent is negative. Drop the x10
