FLOOD PROTECTION PROJECT IN THE ODRA AND WISŁA RIVER BASINS Modernisation works on the border Odra River Introduction FLOOD PROTECTION PROJECT IN THE ODRA AND WISŁA RIVER BASINS Project objective: Increasing the level of flood protection for the population living in the selected areas of the Odra and upper Wisła river basins and institutional strengthening of the government administration in terms of providing more effective protection against summer and winter floods and violent floods. Benefits of the Project implementation: The Project will ensure the construction or modernisation of the flood protection infrastructure and the implementation of related activities in the areas of: central and lower Odra River, the Kłodzko Valley, i.e. the Nysa Kłodzka river basin, selected fragments of the upper Wisła river basin (Cracow, Sandomierz), areas in the catchments of the Raba and San Rivers. 2

FLOOD PROTECTION PROJECT IN THE ODRA AND WISŁA RIVER BASINS Modernisation works on the border Odra River Introduction FLOOD PROTECTION PROJECT IN THE ODRA AND WISŁA RIVER BASINS Time frame of the Project: 2015-2022 Project costs: The Project costs are estimated at EUR 1.2 billion, including construction, acquisition of land, resettlement, administrative, supervisory and tax costs, including the provision for unforeseen works and increase of prices. In the Polish currency, the costs amount to PLN 4.74 billion (costs planned for completion of the Project in 2022). 3

FLOOD PROTECTION PROJECT IN THE ODRA AND WISŁA RIVER BASINS Modernisation works on the border Odra River Introduction FLOOD PROTECTION PROJECT IN THE ODRA AND WISŁA RIVER BASINS Benefits of the Project implementation: 15.1 million people live in the areas in the direct vicinity of the proposed actions (of which 5.2 million inhabitants are directly exposed to floods); 122 000 inhabitants are exposed to floods with a probability of occurrence once every 100 years and these people will benefit from the Project by receiving full physical protection or its improvement in relation to the present situation. 5

Modernisation works on the border Odra River Necessity of Project implementation Objective: Enabling effective ice breaking actions by ensuring the required draught depths for icebreakers to operate. Lack of other alternative methods to counteract ice jamming floods: passive methods - fixed dams, floating dams active methods - ice breaking with the use of hovercraft, with the use of explosives, with the use of construction equipment.
