Preamble The Declaration of Independence We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

Freedom Week Two future presidents signed the Declaration: John Adams (second president) and Thomas Jefferson (third president) Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826, 50 years after the first Independence Day.
