Scituate Public Schools-Technology Mission Statement We are preparing our students to be responsible and productive users of technology by providing technology rich learning environments in which we invest in technology and training to support our students' educational needs, and supports our curriculum.

Scituate Public Schools-Technology Vision Statement Scituate Public Schools will use technology to empower students to think critically, communicate effectively, solve problems creatively, and be actively engaged in their learning. By creating a technology rich environment, a community of 21st Century lifelong learners will be provided with the skills to succeed in a world of constant change.

Purpose Providing students with G Suite for Education accounts and a Chromebook to use at school and home is an initiative that is will move the district toward this vision for the 21st century classroom.

Goals As part of the G Suite for Education and 1:1 Chromebook initiatives, students will: Participate in a variety of opportunities to demonstrate the relevance and interconnectedness of their knowledge and skills. Use technology tools to communicate, collaborate, create and publish their work. Engage in increasingly personalized and student-centered learning environments. Demonstrate and model the attitudes and attributes of a responsible digital and global citizen.

What is G Suite for Education? Free, secure online tools for staff and students Includes Email (for SMS and SHS students) Calendar Drive (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Keep) Sites Classroom Everything is secure, online, and accessible by teachers and students from anywhere

Why G Suite for Education for Scituate students? Documents and files can easily be shared and worked on collaboratively No special software is required, just a web browser Students can access their work from anywhere

FAQ: Is there a G Suite for Education Terms of Service Agreement? Yes, each district or school enters into a formal "Terms of Service" agreement with Google that details all of the responsibilities of both parties and the level of service Google commits to provide. FAQ: Is G Suite for Education secure? Yes, G Suite for Education is very secure and Google is transparent about how they store and secure user data. FAQ: Does Google own staff and student data within G Suite for Education? No, Google does NOT own any staff and student data stored within G Suite for Education. FAQ: Will students see advertisements? No, G Suite for Education accounts are NOT the same as personal Gmail/Google accounts. Advertisements are turned off for staff and student accounts and Google does not target ads for Education users. https://www.google.com/edu/trust/#are-there- ads-in-google-apps-of-education

FAQ: Do other schools use G Suite for Education? Yes, many K12 schools, colleges and universities are currently using G Suite for Education, including a number of R.I. Why Chromebooks? Based on research and implementation of similar programs, Chromebooks were the best choice because of these reasons Affordability Usability Deployability Supportability

Why Chromebooks? Affordability Cost of Chromebook, $200-$350 Cost of traditional laptop, $500-$1,000 Additional considerations Cases

Why Chromebooks? Usability Does the device do the things that students need and in an age-appropriate way? More traditional form-factor that includes an integrated keyboard is better for writing and assessments Boots in seconds, leaving more time for instruction Runs modern web-based tools, apps and services (including RICAS TestNav, and PSAT- SAT)

Why Chromebooks? Supportability What does it take to keep devices up and running and available for students to use? Chromebooks automatically update themselves, both for security and new features If there is an issue with a device, a replacement can be easily swapped because the student’s data and content resides in their G Suite account In-House Acer Cert. Tech

FAQ: Will students take the Chromebooks home? The recommendation of the Technology Committee is that middle and high school students should be able to take the Chromebooks home. SHS and SMS students are provided protective cases. In-house support ACER certified technician

FAQ: What systems will be in place to keep students safe while using the Chromebook? Student internet access on the Chromebooks will be filtered in accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) whether they are using them at school or away from school. The level of web filtering is determined by the age level of the student. The School Committee reviewed and approved a Chromebook

FAQ: Will students be using the Chromebooks all day while in school? No, the students will not be using the Chromebooks all day while in school. While we believe that it’s important for students to learn how to use technology to support their learning, other activities that do not involve technology are still equally important.

FAQ: How will repairs, loss and theft be handled? The District will repair or replace damaged equipment and/or peripherals resulting from normal use. The cost of repeated accidental breakages, intentional damage, loss, or theft shall be the responsibility of the student/parent/guardian. All instances shall be reviewed on a case by case basis by the school principal and Director of Technology.

FAQ: Is student data at risk if a Chromebook is lost or stolen? Student data in their Scituate Google Account is stored in the cloud, not stored locally on the device. This data is not recoverable from a lost or stolen Chromebook without the student’s login credentials. The exception would be files that students download locally and these files are encrypted using tamper-resistant hardware.
