Importance of Internships Provides students experience in their community, exploring something they are interested in. Students receive consistent feedback from a trusted adult regarding their work ethic and conduct in a real-world setting. Modern internships are designed to teach young people general work skills, not just the specific skills of their mentor.

City High Internship Goals: a) Teach students workplace and academic skills through project-based learning in a real-world context b) Provide local organizations with a well-supported intern who provides a modest return on investment to establish a relationship of reciprocity c) Foster students’ personal growth and understanding of the professional world

Habits of Heart and Mind ACTION: take initiative, devise and adjust plans, motivate classmates, take responsibility EVIDENCE: cite evidence, collect and analyze data, consider sources EXPRESSION: communicate clearly, make compelling presentations, consider audience INQUIRY: be curious, ask questions, seek new levels of understanding PERSPECTIVE: incorporate other viewpoints into your own thinking, change your mind REFLECTION: know how you learn and why you think the way you do

City High Expectations of Students Be on time, onsite, courteous, and fully present  Take pride in your work, demeanor, and actions Communicate clearly and ask for feedback  If you are going to miss a scheduled shift, please contact your supervisor with at least 24 hours notice Work with your mentor to contribute to the organization’s success  Learn from your mistakes Submit online weekly timesheets You are representing CHS; don’t let us down!

Tips for Workplace Mentors page 18 of Handbook Keep a Watchful Eye Ask Open-Ended Questions Provide Support Without Rescuing Avoid Messages of Perfection

Logistics and Legal Limitations Schedule: September 3, 2019 – May 1, 2020; 4-6 hours per week; No hours are required during school breaks; graduation requirement Insurance: Interns are covered by City High School liability insurance while on-site Transportation: Must be provided by student

Caveat: You can be FIRED from an Internship Internships can be changed under the following circumstances:  1. The internship is unsafe in any way  2. There is a mismatch between mentor and mentee that impedes learning  If either of this occurs, the Intern needs to schedule a meeting with the Internship Coordinator, and Mentor if it’s appropriate. A student may be fired if the they are not meeting the requirements of the internship, even after conversations and redirections from the mentor/supervisor AND a conversation with Alisha has been completed

When to Contact the Internship Coordinator The intern is consistently tardy or absent The intern is not fulfilling their required duties The intern is being consistently disrespectful or inappropriate You have any other concerns or questions

Your Assignment Right Now: 1. Discuss what each of you understand about your particular internship and how it fits into the guidelines I laid out. 2. Together, complete the 2019-2020 City High School Internship Information form 3. Peruse the Internship Handbook and pay particular attention to pages 11-16.

POP QUIZ True of False? According to the handbook, students work and learn best when coddled and have work completed for them. True or False: Students are NOT encouraged to ask questions. True or False: City High encourages mentors to get to know their interns by visiting the school. Why should mentors communicate directly and openly to their intern about disruptive or counterproductive behavior?

Your Homework: Complete Orientation To Internship Site handout together at the internship site.  Return it to Alisha by September 24, 2019 Participate, learn, and enjoy yourself!
