Climate of the rainforest -why animals/plants adapted and how this has helped them

What can we remember from Tuesday about where ecosystems are located?

Local factors Altitude – As you go higher, it gets colder. Continentality (Distance from the sea) Away from the sea, land is warmer in summer and cooler in winter Nutrient rich environment – gives food for plants either from the soil or sea

Back to back drawing You need to sit with your back to your partner and describe the image you see on the board Your partner needs to draw what you are describing Credits for the best!

Why does Boris like to live in the rainforest?

Hangman _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Hangman A d a p t e d

Boris had adapted to living in the rainforest What do you think the climate is like of the rainforest? *Key word* Climate = Temperature

Draw what I’m describing on your whiteboard! I will describe a feature of the rainforest and how it has been adapted and you need to draw this feature

This animal will always win the marathon in the forest This animal will always win the marathon in the forest. They are found in habitats near water and they are very good swimmers. They eat big as well as small animals like turtles, birds and reptiles. They have strong short legs, a strong jaw and long and sharp teeth which enable them to catch and kill large animals swiftly, often with a single bite. They can live on the trees for months when the forest floor is flooded. They have a muscular build. The smaller in size than other similar animas so it is easy for them to live on the trees.

Jaguar!

They live in the top of the rainforests, and almost never coming to the ground. Their long limbs, their strong tail are good examples of rainforest adaptations. They swing through the rainforest canopy and hang suspended by their tails. The powerful tail works as a 5th arm and is often used for balance. They use their long limbs to pick their favourite food, fruits. It is quite amazing to watch them moving around in the trees; as with one swing of the arm, they can cover 8 metres!

Spider monkey!

This feature of the forest trees have adapted to cope with exceptionally high rainfall. The shape of this allows rain drops to run off quickly. Plants need to shed water to avoid growth of fungus and bacteria in the warm, wet tropical rainforest.

Dip tip leaf!

This animal is known for its big bill This animal is known for its big bill. They eat fruits and sleep in the holes in the trees. To fit into a small hole, they turn themselves into a feathery ball and make their body smaller. Their perfect claws allow them to stand on the trees (two claws in the front and two in the back) Their colouring allows them to blend into the surroundings have helped them survive.

Toucan!

Homework! Due in one weeks time… You need to draw or print off a drip tip leaf. On the back you need to explain why a drip tip is good/how has it adapted

How are these animals adapted?
