Week 10 Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) Methods Week 10 Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) 1

Homework Today’s Class- Ch. 9 – CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) Read Ch 10 - Content-based Instruction (CBI) First, in TP3 read the sections: Introduction, Experience and Thinking About the Experience (pp. 131-139) Then use the TESOL Method Workbook (TMWB, pp. 58-61) As you re-read the chapter look at and answer the questions in the workbook

CLT Survey Discuss in a group. What is TRUE about CLT?

TESOL Method Workbook Open the book to page 55 Discuss questions 1-3: What is the goal? What is linguistic competence? What is communicative competence? How are they different? What are language functions? Can you give me some examples?

CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) Consider the CLT video and the sample lesson in the textbook (116-119) and discuss the following: What are the language functions in the lessons? How are the activities in the sample lesson’s communicative? What is the T’s role? What is the S’s role? What are some characteristics of the teaching/learning process? Assessment? How are errors handled?

The Communicative Activity Checklist: It has meaningful communication (a reason). It has clear instructions. The teacher organizes groups/pairs. The teacher checks in often (monitors). Students have clear group/individual roles Activity/Task is well-organized. Students and the teacher stay in the TL. Students have a reason to listen. The teacher sets high, but reasonable expectations. Peers understand that they can learn from each other. The teacher gives feedback (Before/After use activity, but NOT during the use activity).

What are some common CLT activities? Make a list with your group.

CLT On p. 56 in the TMWB and pages 126-128 in TPLT, look at the 5 techniques and talk about how they work with your partner Authentic materials Scrambled sentences (whole vs. parts) Language games Picture strip stories Role play

Experience #1: Personal Info Gap Bring your worksheet & a pen Make two lines Take turns asking, answering and writing. A: What’s one of your favorite foods? <B writes questions as A asks> B: My favorite Korean food is _____. <A writes answer> B: What’s one of your favorite foods? A: One of my favorite foods is ____.

Logic Gap: Where’s Gina? What’s your first clue? Student A has 3 clues Student B has 3 clues Take turns sharing your clues Don’t SHOW your clues to your partner My ___ clue is… What’s your __ clue?

CLT – In Class Activity On p. 57 create instructions for students for the two activities Think about how I gave instructions for the two previous activities
