PLTW Terms PLTW Vocabulary Set #8

#1 Amplifier A device of electronic components used to increase power, voltage, or current of a signal.

#2 Atom A particle which is the smallest unit of a chemical element. It is made up mainly of electrons in orbit around protons.

#3 Conductor A material that allows the free flow of electric charge. Copper wiring is the most widely used electrical conductor.

#4 Electricity The flow of electrons from atom to atom in a conductor.

#5 Electrons A tiny particle which rotates around the nucleus of an atom. It has a negative charge of electricity.

#6 Insulator A material in which an electronic charge does not flow freely and does not conduct the flow of electric current.

#7 Neutrons An uncharged particle. Present in atomic nucleus.

#8 Nucleus The center portion of an atom containing the protons and neutrons.

#9 Protons A particle which, together with the neutron constitutes the nucleus of an atom. It exhibits a positive charge of electricity.

#10 Semiconductor A material that behaves between a conductor and an insulator depending on the conditions.
