LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Role of each participant (applicant, department evaluation committee chair, department chair, university-wide committee, dean) Blank Slide In addition to meeting CBA deadlines FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Materials to be submitted by applicant: Current vitae Data in support of Teaching Evaluations (student, peer, chair) Syllabi Continuing scholarly growth Service: contribution to the university and/or community Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Role of Applicant File is closed at time of deadline; nothing can be added after review process has begun Helpful but not required to engage in self-reflection: “What does this body of work mean in my discipline? What are my plans for continuous improvement in the next review period?” Educate through submitted materials what is important to you Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Role of Department Evaluation Committee & DEC Chairs Evaluate: “Here’s what this body of evidence means from our discipline’s standpoint.” Summarize what has been accomplished during review period and explain what it means to you. What is the rationale for your recommendation? Qualitatively assess the material, not provide a job reference or simply list what has occurred during evaluation period View as opportunity to educate the University Wide Committee (if involved) and administration about what is appropriate for your discipline Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Role of Department Chairs Insure formation of Department Evaluation Committee and educate committee on its role Helpful to encourage applicant to engage in self-reflection: what does this mean to him/her? Assist applicant to know what materials to submit Provide valuable feedback on expectations, given discipline If department chair is under five-year review, approval must be obtained from Dean re: the appointment of an acting evaluation chair (ideally a chair from another related department) Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Role of University Wide Committees (Tenure & Promotion) Review evidence submitted and determine recommendation Each applicant invited to appear before committee but applicant not required to do so Deliberations are confidential and not discussed outside committee meetings Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Role of the Dean One of our most important tasks – our report provides suggestions to applicant and makes recommendation to provost/president Summarize reviews of all parties to this point Review syllabi to insure all elements are present; if SLO’s are assessed; if evidence of direct measures of student learning Review all evaluations and assess for trends Recommend areas for future growth and development Is this body of evidence sufficient? Are there areas in which improvement is needed? Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Examples of helpful statements in reports “We believe this to be true based on this evidence:______.” “As chair, I believe this category minimally meets expectations and should be a focus of further work in the next review period.” Organizing one’s report in sections for teaching, scholarship, service Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Examples of unhelpful statements in reports “He is a fine person and we are fortunate to have him on staff.” “I concur with the department evaluation committee.” “It is not reasonable to expect anything here but minimal scholarship because we are a teaching institution.” “Student evaluations are not valid due to small n’s.” “We recommend her for obvious reasons.” Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.

Going forward…. … What would be helpful from Office of the Deans? … Questions on making this process more smooth? Blank Slide FAMILY. LEGACY. TRADITION. MANSFIELD.
