BOARD OF TRUSTEES April 12, 2019 10-YEAR REACCREDITATION EVALUATION Trustees Draft 2 July 30, 2019, 2:00 p.m.

WHAT Purdue University West Lafayette is undergoing a routine reaccreditation evaluation by the Higher Learning Commission, a reaffirmation process undertaken once every 10 years. A team of faculty and staff, led by the Office of the Provost, has been working diligently to prepare for the reaccreditation visit. This reaccreditation focuses solely on Purdue West Lafayette.

WHO CONDUCTS INSTITUTIONAL REVIEWS? The Higher Learning Commission, which is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, has legal authority from the Department of Education to accredit colleges and universities. HLC accreditation is based on a peer review process.

WHY ARE THESE REVIEWS CONDUCTED? Maintain the institution’s eligibility to receive federal funds for student financial aid. Assure the quality of the institution and its programs through enforcement of financial and administrative standards. Encourage improvement of the institution and its programs. Promote institutional accountability and provide consumers with information about the institution.

TWO MAIN COMPONENTS Written Self-Study HLC Campus Visit Oct. 14-15 An extensive self-evaluation, called the “assurance review,” provides Purdue’s written case for reaccreditation. HLC Campus Visit Oct. 14-15 Eight HLC peer review team members will visit campus and conduct planned and ad hoc interviews with a range of stakeholders, including the president, provost, Board of Trustees, deans, university senate leadership, department heads, faculty, staff and students. The peer review team determines with whom they will meet.

CRITERIA Purdue will be evaluated according to the following five criteria, which are the primary subjects of the written study and the on-campus visit. MISSION: What are we working toward? Is our mission clear and does it guide our operations? INTEGRITY: Are we transparent? Do we act ethically and responsibly? TEACHING AND LEARNING: Do we provide a high quality education and the resources and support to back our students’ success? ASSESSMENT: How do we evaluate our performance and student learning outcomes? Do we actively strive to improve? PLANNING: What is our plan for the future? Are we adequately prepared to accomplish our mission? The formal language of each criterion is available on the accreditation website: www.hlcommission.org/Policies/criteria-and-core-components.html

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TEAM VISIT? The peer review team will prepare a report that includes examples that will reflect how Purdue successfully meets each of the five criteria. Purdue will be asked to review the report for accuracy. The Higher Learning Commission leadership will issue the final statement on Purdue West Lafayette reaccreditation status.

HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED Attend a drop-in session with a team member. Times and places for drop-in sessions will be published in Purdue Today and on the Purdue HLC Web site. Read the criteria for reaccreditation: www.hlcommission.org/Policies/criteria-and-core-components.html
