Primary Succession Primary succession occurs in an area that previously did not support life. Pioneer Species: colonizes an uninhabited area so other species can become established bacteria and lichens most common

Secondary Succession Secondary succession occurs on a surface where an ecosystem has previously existed Partially or totally destroyed Soil is still present Causes: fires, human disturbances, flood
