IT’S RED NOSE DAY! A day of fun and fundraising It’s Red Nose Day 2019! The whole school is going to come together to raise money that will change lives here in the UK and in the world’s poorest communities.

Show pupils this short film about Farhad, a 12-year-old boy living in a refugee camp in Serbia. The film will help your pupils understand the challenges faced by refugee children and how the money raised for Red Nose Day helps. If you experience any problems with this you can download the film (or stream it) at comicrelief.com/farhad Farhad’s family fled to Serbia from Iran, travelling on foot, by car and on a smuggler’s boat. When they came close to sinking, Farhad had to throw his most precious possessions – his pencils and paintbrushes – overboard. Comic Relief, in partnership with Help Refugees UK, funded Refugee Foundation Serbia to support Farhad’s learning. The project also organised day trips away from the camp, where he could hone his ball skills or sit and quietly sketch. After watching the film you could have a discussion with your pupils about Farhad and some of the issues raised by the film. You could use the questions below as prompts. There are some words in the film that may be unfamiliar to your pupils. You may want to check their understanding. Refugee: A refugee is someone who has been forced to leave their home because it’s no longer safe for them to live there. This might be because there is a war or it could be because they are being mistreated or abused because of their religion, beliefs or culture. Borders: In the film, Farhad mentions ‘borders’. A border is the edge of a country, where it meets the sea or another country. On a map, it is shown as a line. In many cases, you cannot cross a border without official papers that give you permission to visit the next country. Farhad’s family were not able to get these papers. Smuggler: Farhad talks about ‘smugglers’. He is referring to the people smugglers that his parents paid to move the family from Iran to Turkey, then Greece and into Serbia. Under international law, it is illegal to smuggle people across borders. However, refugees often feel they have no choice but to turn to smugglers to help them escape. International law acknowledges that sometimes this is the only way to escape and states refugees should not be punished for using smugglers. Questions Where does Farhad live? Why does Farad live there? How did Farhad travel to Serbia? What do you think would be the hardest thing about Farhad’s life? What does Farhad like to do? £3 could cover the cost of crayons, pencils, paint and paper for children living in a Serbian refugee camp. £8 could cover the cost of school books and stationery for a child living in a Serbian refugee camp. £36 could pay for a week of hot, nutritious meals for a family living in a Serbian refugee camp. £310 could pay for a month of language lessons for children living in a Serbian refugee camp. As you’ve seen from Farhad’s story, Red Nose Day money changes lives for the better. That’s why so many people come together to fundraise for Red Nose Day. And that’s why we’re going to do our best to raise as much money as we can.

£1 could cover the cost of a hot meal for a homeless person in the UK. AND DID YOU KNOW THAT HALF THE MONEY YOU DONATE WILL BE USED IN THE UK? Money raised for Red Nose Day is used to help people in the UK too. £1 could cover the cost of a hot meal for a homeless person in the UK. £220 could pay for a one-on-one support session to boost the self-esteem and aspirations of a vulnerable girl in the UK.

SO HOW SHALL WE RAISE MONEY THIS RED NOSE DAY? If you already have plans, share them with your pupils now. If you’ve set a fundraising target, you could tell pupils about it. There are so many fun things to choose from. We could: Dress up as our favourite Red Noses Test our knowledge with a big Red Nose Day quiz Hold a talent show Show off our dancing skills at a disco or danceathon Raise some ‘dough’ with a bake sale.
