Presentation transcript:

What would you tell them? Imagine that you have a younger brother, sister, niece, or nephew. He or she looks up to you a lot, and asks you many difficult questions. You don’t ever want to see your younger brother, sister, niece, or nephew be upset or hurt, so you have decided to come up with a list of advice for how he or she can grow up to be a good person, and to be as stress free as possible. What would you tell them?

The Lotus Flower

In the same way, you might have heard that… As a student, you have seen that some students do very well in class even when they don’t study, while others struggle to maintain their good grades in spite of studying very hard. In the same way, you might have heard that… …for some people money come easily, while others struggle to even find a job. …some people are sick all the time, while others never or rarely get sick. …while someone lives for over one hundred years, someone else dies as a young child. Even today, we look for answers to these strange disparities. Some may say it is God’s will, others may say it is his or her own luck, and still others will have different reasoning. Hinduism says every thing happens due to the result of our past doings. Buddhism says life is full of suffering, and to eliminate suffering, we must eliminate our desires. How would Hinduism and Buddhism address these issues?

Four Noble Truths 1. LIFE IS FULL OF SUFFERING 2. DESIRE IS THE CAUSE OF THE SUFFERING 3. PEOPLE MUST REJECT DESIRE TO END SUFFERING 4. FOLLOWING THE EIGHTFOLD PATH HELPS OVER COME DESIRES

*GIVE UP WORDLY DESIRES TO BEGIN THE PATH TO ACHIEVE NIRVANA* EIGHTFOLD PATH 1- KNOWLEDGE OF TRUTH 2- INTENTION TO RESIST EVIL 3- SAY NOTHING TO HURT OTHERS 4- RESPECT FOR LIFE, MORALITY, AND PROPERTY 5- HOLDING A JOB THAT DOES NOT INJURE OTHERS 6- WORKING TO FREE ONE’S MIND OF EVIL 7- CONTROLLING ONE’S FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS 8- PRACTICING PROPER FORMS OF CONCENTRATION OR MEDITATION Nirvana: Union with the universe- release from the cycle of rebirth

His Holiness, The Dalai Lama Spiritual leader of Buddhism Believed to be the reincarnation of a series of spiritual leaders who have been chosen to be reborn in order to enlighten others.

Hinduism Buddhism No single founder Caste system Brahma- all powerful source. Polytheistic Brahma- Creator Vishnu- Preserver Shiva- Destroyer Some see cow as sacred animal Mostly in India Founder- Siddhartha Gautama- Buddha 4 Noble Truths Eightfold Path Sacred text- Tripitaka Spread throughout Asia Get rid of worldly desires. Originated in India Reincarnation Dharma Karma Non-violence (Ahimsa) Meditation Moksha, Nirvana = Becoming one with the universe

Why did Buddhism spread more easily than Hinduism throughout Asia? Many Hindus saw Buddhism as an escape from the rigid caste hierarchy (Buddha believed that any person could achieve Enlightenment regardless of caste). Buddhism’s core principles are simple, and easy to identify with (“life is full of suffering). Buddhism does not emphasize the worship of gods, but instead it focuses on eliminating suffering within the individual. Therefore, Buddhism could easily be used as a supplement to other religious beliefs.

On his first attempt to teach, the Buddha failed.
