Artist Statements

Why should you write an Artist Statement? Benefits for the viewers/audience: People who love an artist's work generally want to know more about the artist. Your statement will help your viewers/audience answer questions that they may have about your art. When viewers have answers, their interest in what you do increases, and they have more reasons to take your work home with them. The artist's statement is an effective marketing tool, building a bridge between the artist and the audience.

Why should you write an Artist Statement? Benefits for the artist: In putting your art into words, you might find that ideas and thoughts you once had become more concrete. Your writing may open new ideas in your mind and take you in new artistic directions. Your artist statement might help you discover more about yourself as an artist.

Artist Statement Checklist My statement includes facts about my art. - Materials - How I made it - Why I made it My statement includes interesting “behind the scenes” information about my art, or me as an artist. My statement uses words that are easy to read that aren't too fancy or used as filler. My statement shares my ideas, but still allows viewers to come up with their own thoughts and feelings as well.
