Behaviors That College Professors Expect of You

Setting It Up Divide your paper into 4 quadrants and label as follows: Intellect Behavior Self-Advocacy Technology

Directions: You will get a slip of paper that lists one of the expectations. Decide where that expectation belongs in the four quadrants. Is it related to Intellect? Behavior? Self-advocacy? Technology?

Give 1, Get 1 Move around the room and share the information from your slip with your classmates. Listen! Then write down 10 of the expectations that you hear. (Paraphrase). Once you have 10 things listed, take your seat.

Categorize and Share Now we’ll generate a complete list of the 31 expectations Make sure you’ve categorized them into the four quadrants correctly.

The WHOLE list! 1. Exhibit curiosity 2. Experiment with new ideas 3. See other points of view 4. Challenge their own beliefs 5. Engage in intellectual discussions 6. Ask provocative questions

Students should be able to… 22. Navigate e-mail; compose, send, and receive e-mail; and post attachments 23. Employ e-mail etiquette 24. Navigate the Internet and the World Wide Web, recognizing the significance of domains (e.g., com, net, edu, org, gov) 25. Use search engines effectively 26. Evaluate the authenticity of the Website, the credibility of the author and the validity of material found on the Web

Students should be able to… 27. Know how to cite Internet sources 28. Know what constitutes plagiarism and how to avoid it when using the Internet. 29. Contribute to discussions online 30. Use visual aids or applications-based visual programs (such as PowerPoint to present original work or research or support the content of an oral report) 31. Create and maintain a Website.

Set your goals Highlight 9-10 goals that you will set for yourself this year. Keep this paper in your class folder so you can refer back to it as the year progresses.

What can we do? Practice the value of coming to class with questions about the assigned reading. Learn the value of meeting deadlines. Understand the value of going to faculty office hours to discuss assignments (in our case, meeting with your teacher and attending Homework Central).
