UNIT 4: PUBLISHING TECHNOLOGY

Is there a future for publishing (newspapers) in the age of digital content?

Publishing includes a range of industries concerned with the production and distribution of information including newspapers, magazines, books, journals and directories. Publishing is a rapidly changing sector. Developments in online publishing and digital technologies are changing the landscape of the industry.

But change has accelerated Portals Search Video Classifieds Social media Blogging

CHANGE IN NEWS PROCESSES More interaction with the audience Entrepreneurial journalism on the rise 24-hour news cycle More emphasis on graphics, and using data to better explain a story

ONLINE WRITING: HOW IT IS DIFFERENT? Inverted pyramid style still rules supreme. Sentences are shorter, as are paragraphs. Especially the lead Text almost always accompanied by photos or a graphic or a bullet box or videos. Important to study the audience, understand how people are using what you are doing. Trend encouraging for young students who can use accessible technology to create multimedia pieces

E-PUBLISHING TYPES

1. Electronic books An e-Book also known as a digital book, is an e-text that forms the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book. A standard for e-book software such as OEB (open e e-book) has been developed. E book contents can be delivered in various forms: via internet, CD forms: CD-ROM etc

2. E-Journal A serial containing scholarly communications and articles issued periodically in electronic form by employing computers. Journals are available either online, in CD ROM or as networked e journals.

3. Print-on-demand Printing books which allows books to be printed one at a time or on demand. Technology involves complex laser printing systems and electronically formatted texts. It still uses paper and cannot be delivered as cheaply and quickly as electronic books.

4. EMAIL PUBLISHING Receiving news items, articles and short newsletters in email box. Authors and writers publish their own newsletters to attract new readers and to inform their fans about new books or papers.

5. E-Paper E-Paper combines the presentation possibilities of the printed newspaper with those of the online newspaper
