Figure 1 Lipid droplets in Drosophila embryos serve as a storage depot for histones H2A and H2B. H2A and H2B are released from lipid droplets and transported into the nucleus, most likely escorted by a chaperone protein. Within the nucleus, H3–H4 tetramers assemble onto genomic DNA, followed by the association of two H2A–H2B dimers. The resulting nucleosome is the basic unit of chromatin packaging.
