Western Norway & Bergen, Norway Tove Giske Experience from VID FH Bergen intp SC standard for education

Betanien & Haraldsplass 2 campuses in Bergen Betanien & Haraldsplass Bachelor study in nursing, 3 years general nursing education 180 – 200 students pr year = 550 undergradute students About 40 faculty Tove Giske Experience from VID FH Bergen intp SC standard for education

Objectives for the use/implementation of the EPICC standard Rising awareness among leaders and faculty of the what we already have in our curriculum (theory and practice) about spiritual care That spiritual care is taught in all three years of the BSN program Start a process where all teachers become more aware of spiritual care as part of holistic nursing, and especially how it can be followed up in clinical practice throughout the BSN program Ensure that spiritual care literature are present in all three study years Tove Giske Experience from VID FH Bergen intp SC standard for education

Activities undertaken to realize the objectives Go through the curriculum to identify what is already there covering the EPICC 1st draft of spiritual care education. Little related to teaching in school It is part of every evaluation in clinical studies 2. Literature to study & relevance for exams. 1st year: 1 chapter about spiritual care + 3 chapters about values in professional practice +2 articles explicitly related to spiritual care. In addition readings about communication, ethics, diaconia. 2nd year: 2 chapters about spiritual care + more chapters about values in professional practice + 2 chapters about cultures. 2 articles explicitly related to spiritual care. In addition readings about communication, ethics, diaconia. 3rd year: more chapters about values in professional practice + 2 chapters about cultures + 3 articles explicitly related to spiritual care. In addition readings about communication, ethics. Tove Giske Experience from VID FH Bergen intp SC standard for education

3rd year: Not explicitly spiritual care teaching 3. Education. Ist year: 4 – 5 h introduction for 2 groups of 80 students. Mandatory participation - 2nd year: Got 2 new h to teach, has not been explicate teaching about spiritual care before. Follow up from 1st year’s teaching and build on all the practice they have from 2nd study year. Madatory participation. Used Model of assessing & following up patients (toolkit). Kahoot showed that attitudes are great, follow up in real life situations are poor. 3rd year: Not explicitly spiritual care teaching 4. Gathered teachers from 1st year to evaluate how teaching, pensum, exams and follow up in clinical studies to keep a focus on spiritual care as part of nursing and how we can plan for the coming study year to integrate it even more. 5. Research group at VID Bergen; Existence, we have presented and discussed how to handle challenging situations regarding the point of spiritual care evaluation of students in clinical practice. Our research group has offered to facilitate reflections and discussions around scenarios from evaluation situations for all faculty the coming study year to equip all faculty for better quality during such evaluation talks. 6. Provided written feedback to ensure a more holistic framework where culture and life views are integrated into the framework in the suggested new national framework for nursing education. We have discussed and provided written feedback Tove Giske Experience from VID FH Bergen intp SC standard for education

What documents and recordings did you use/make during these activities Draft EPICC Standard for Spiritual Care Education as my reference point. We work on all 9 competences. I used our university’s curriculum (in Norwegian) for theory and practice + lists of pensum and referred to relevant research. Tove Giske Experience from VID FH Bergen intp SC standard for education

Additional remarks: It would be easier to use the standard of we could make it even shorter and more compact. There will always be a fluid line between general nursing care and spiritual care so perhaps we need to elaborate some more over that in our presentation of the EPICC standard.
