Welcome to Orientation! *Introduction *Parent Volunteers *ELA Class *Recycling By: Ann Jackson

Questions?? *Please write your questions on a Post It and either leave it on your table with you leave or email it to me. Please don’t wait until December to ask.

We ADORE VOLUNTEERS! Pier 45 Volunteers: Each classroom teacher on Pier 45 has a box in the workroom at the end of this hallway. We will put things in the box we need help doing, so you can come at your convenience to check the boxes and work on things as you have time. If you can help on a regular basis, please email your child’s homeroom teacher to let him or her know.

LA Class this year! *For the first 9 weeks grading period, your child is free to read whatever he/she wants. I will do check ins with the students to hold them accountable for reading in and out of class. *The Tower of Books Challenge will begin at the beginning of the 2nd 9 weeks grading period. *Our Great Genre Challenge will begin at the beginning of the 3rd 9 weeks. *Your child should read about 20 minutes nightly. This will most likely be the only homework for this class. *We use a variety of computer programs in ELA class: Study Island, Readworks, Whooo’s Reading, Moby Max, etc. *I will do read alouds with picture books almost every day.

Grammar/Writing (Purpose, audience, components, etc. of each *Narrative writing, opinion writing, expository writing (Purpose, audience, components, etc. of each *Grammar-parts of speech through mentor sentences, using correct grammar in speech and writing- Weekly homework after Christmas-spiral review *Responding to Reading through Writing- more than just answering a question-giving evidence and reasons from the text for your answers- Whoooo’s Reading program Ex) If you could spend the day with a character in your story, who would you choose? What activities would you choose to do that day? Support your answer with evidence from the text.
