Fractions A fraction can show us a part of a set. In this example, we have 2 red skittles and 2 yellow skittles 2 red skittles 2 yellow
Fractions Our total number in the set is 1, 2, 3…. 10 Skittles in all. Count them with me. We’ll put our total number on the bottom of our fraction because the big, heavy number sinks to the bottom. ___ 10 total # of Skittles
Fractions The total number of red Skittles is 2. We’ll put that number on top of the20. 2 # of red skittles 1o total # of Skittles 2 red skittles
Fractions We read it like this: “I have 1o skittles in all. two-tenths of my skittles are red.” _2_ # of red Skittles 10 total # of skittles
Fractions We can also say: “I have 10 skittles in all. One-tenth of my skittles are red.” 2 10 “Two-tenths of my skittles are green.” 2 10
Now you do one by yourself. How many skittles are there in this set? You’re right! There are 6 skittles in all.
Now you do one by yourself. What part of this set has orange skittles? You’re right! There are 2 orange skittles.
Now you do one by yourself. How do we write that as a fraction? You’re right! “two-sixths of our skittles are orange .” 2 6
