“Exploring the material world” Teaching kit “Exploring the material world” Educational activities for Roma children and families

Solar treatment of water… The different aspects of the discovery of the material world can only be approached from real-life situations and observation satisfying children’s curiosity.

Activity 9 : Solar treatment of water.. This activity requires supervision. The mediator will begin by presenting the relevant activity sheet.

Activity 9 : How to treat water with sunlight Exploring the material world – solar treatment of water Sheet n° 9 Activity 9 : How to treat water with sunlight Solar disinfection of water This is a simple method that can be used if water cannot be boiled.

- Tell me what you can see on the sheet. Question 1 : - Tell me what you can see on the sheet. Sheet n° 9 Solar disinfection of water This is a simple method that can be used if water cannot be boiled.

At nursery school, the important thing is that children should identify and name what they see.

Experiment to suggest to the children : Together we are going to find out about a new way of making water clear and fit for drinking. Together we are going to read the other side of the activity sheet :

To treat water with sunlight you need : Exploring the material world – solar treatment of water Sheet n° 9 To treat water with sunlight you need : Sunlight Sunny weather A transparent bottle Glass or plastic, washed with clean water Clear water If the water is dirty, let it settle and filter it.

In the course of these exchanges with the adult, an orderly pattern of questioning, clear concepts and, ultimately, knowledge will take shape.

Together we are going to read the second part of the sheet : Exploring the material world – solar treatment of water Sheet n° 9 Together we are going to read the second part of the sheet :

Nous allons lire ensemble la deuxième partie de la fiche : Exploring the material world – solar treatment of water Sheet n° 9 - Look at these pictures? What do they say? The water must be shaken so that it fills with oxygen. This helps the sun’s ultraviolet rays to kill the micro-organisms present in the water. 2. Shake the bottle vigorously for 30 seconds. 7 3. Fill the rest of the bottle with clear water. Early in the morning Nous allons lire ensemble la deuxième partie de la fiche : 1. Fill the bottle half-full and put the top back on.

Activity supervised by the mediator We are going to start the experiment: Early in the morning… 7

Next stage in the experiment: Fill the bottle half-full with clear water Now put the top back on!

Next stage in the experiment: Shake the bottle vigorously for 30 seconds! The water needs to be shaken so that it fills with oxygen. This helps the sun’s ultraviolet rays to kill the micro-organisms present in the water.

Next stage in the experiment: Fill up the rest of the bottle with clear water!

Note all these step in your notebook… Children can illustrate the different stages in the experiment with drawings, notes and photos. (these notes and observations can sometimes be made with the mediator and sometimes independently)

All these experiments are an aid to discussion and to attempts at representation (through drawing or photography), which are themselves new subjects of discussion.

4. Lay the bottle down on a roof or another place where it is exposed to the heat of the sun. Leave the bottle in the sun until the late afternoon: at least 5 hours in full sunlight, 2 days if the sky is cloudy.

5. You can use this water as drinking water. At the end of the day, the sun will have killed most of the microbes present in the water. 4 5. You can use this water as drinking water.

Observing things, conducting experiments and formulating theories are a unique resource for verbal expression and interaction, even for the youngest and most reserved children

the child should be able to… On completion of the activity the child should be able to… identify the stages in solar treatment of water; formulate theories and test them; conduct simple experiments.
