Future Behaviours of Consumers March 2019

Future behaviours Over half of investors indicated they are considering one of these changes in the next 12 months (55%). Around a quarter of those with an investment are considering increasing their KiwiSaver contributions in the next 12 months (23%). This is an increase compared to 2017 results. Similarly, the proportion of investor looking at investing more in an existing investment, investing in a new product, or buying managed funds in the next 12 months is slightly higher compared to 2017. Conversely, the proportion considering investing in residential property in the next 12 months has significantly decreased in comparison to 2017. Separate release Demographic split on these behaviours Significant increase from the 2017 results. Significant decrease from the 2017 results. Q: ‘In the next 12 months are you considering…’ Base: Have an investment: 2018 n=1627; 2017 n= 899

Key differences Investors with more than one investment type are more likely than those with one investment to be considering making a change to their investments in the next 12 months. Investors who rated their recent interaction with their financial provider as excellent are more likely to be considering buying managed funds and investing more in an existing investment in comparison to investors who didn’t have a good experience. Those who said their financial provider communicated with them about the performance of their product are more likely to be considering buying managed funds in comparison to those who haven’t been contacted. In comparison those who mentioned they’re not sure whether or not they have been contacted about the performance of their investment product are more likely to not be considering any of the changes asked in the next 12 months. Investors living in Auckland are slightly more likely than those outside of Auckland to be considering making a change in the next 12 months, particularly buying shares and investing in residential property. Investors aged under 40 years are more likely to be considering increasing their KiwiSaver contributions. These investors are also more likely to be considering investing in residential property (particularly young couples without children).

Background and methodology These future behaviour questions were part of a larger survey FMA commissioned Buzz Channel to conduct last year among New Zealanders to understand their experience with financial services providers. An online survey was undertaken, and a total of n=2011 New Zealanders aged 18 years and over took part in the research, between 24 August and 6 September 2018. Of these 1628 had an investment / financial product or service of some kind (81%). The margin of error on the total sample of n=2011 is +/- 2.2%. And for those with an investment n=1628 is +/- 2.4% (at the 95% confidence level). The data was weighted by gender, age, ethnicity, and region to ensure a sample representative of the New Zealand population aged 18 years and over.
