Children and Young People Update Section Title Children and Young People Update Hubs Event July 2019

Our Work We want this generation to be more open about mental health problems than any before. We work in: Secondary schools Colleges Youth sector organisations

Our Work Our programme of work includes… Free resources National campaigns Training for local areas Youth involvement Social marketing activity

History Hollyfield School hosted the 1st Kingston Student mental health conference in 2014. Ten Pupils each from ten Kingston secondary schools took part. Each of these pupils were to become the first mental health ambassadors (champions) the conference has been held in 5 other schools in Kingston. every new cohort of ambassadors updates their school’s mental health action plan each year.

Aims To increase awareness by young people of how to look after their mental health To encourage young people to get involved in tackling stigma in their school To encourage young people to get involved in developing a whole school approach to mental health in their schools. Young people are confident to talk about mental health and seek help

Agenda & Themes As the conference has been running for a number of years now we have covered a few main themes: self-harm self-esteem stigma and discrimination of mental health and resilience Here is an example agenda that we used this year…

9.00 Welcome – Tiffin Boys Head teacher 9.10 Introduction to Mental Health 9:40 Mingling and ice breaker 9:55 Resilience 10:25 Break 10:40 Time to change – resilience and how to help your friends 11:25 Current ambassadors from Tiffin Boys 11:35 Action planning 12:15 Evaluations and mind apples 12:25 Closing speech by head 12:30 Lunch 13:00 Close

Action planning Schools are given a chance during the conference to work on their school action plans.

Events in schools Time to talk Day Following the conference many schools took part in the Time to Talk Day 2019. Some of the activities that went on in schools were… Mental Health Ambassadors delivered a stigma awareness assembly to other year groups Tea and Chat sessions in staff rooms Counselling rooms were decorated with TTC posters

Kingston Time to change hub In 2018 Kingston became a Time to change hub, initially unfunded and now funded. At this event last year I met the TTC children's team and discussed links to our conference. This year we worked together on a joint conference. It was very well received, see below.

Evaluation from this years conference 102 students attended from 11 different secondary schools & 10 school staff 91% of students that attended said they either enjoyed or really enjoyed the conference overall. The students stated that they found the Time to Change and Champion (Cameron’s) talk the most useful part of the day. ‘The most useful part of the conference I feel was the information that the guest speakers gave us. It was informative, interesting, enjoyable and relatable especially hearing Cameron’s speech.’ ‘Listening to Cameron’s story was important to relate this to someone like us. His story was also inspiring.’   ‘Cameron talking and explaining about his life and experiences was really touching and gave insight into a first hand experience of a mental health disorder.’ ‘I think the most useful part of the conference was the action planning. We all described about what would help with situations inside of school. We all shared ideas and raised awareness to what people have suffered from.’

How we can support hubs . We have supported hubs by: Providing free resources and links to national campaigns Delivering free training sessions for local secondary schools, colleges and youth sector organisations. Involvement in activities aimed at young leaders in schools Attending local headteacher meetings, PSHE network meetings Linking in with schools improvement, healthy schools and PSHE leads in hub areas. .

Our offer for local areas ‘Train the Trainer’ course for teachers to deliver themselves to pupils Young leadership groups developing their own campaigns in schools ‘Social contact’ opportunities where young people share their experience of mental health problems CYP Regional Coordinators and Young Champions delivering together

Our free resources Focus on sustainability to ensure teachers can deliver their own sessions and young people can run their own campaigns, drawing on our resources Signposting to new materials hub to create own content www.time-to-change.org.uk/teachers

National Campaigns Time to Talk Day schools running assemblies and activity on the day In Your Corner November Campaign schools delivering 4 assemblies over the month School action plans schools committing to run stigma busting activity throughout the year
