The GRAND COULEE DAM

Located on the Columbia river in NORTHERN-EASTERN WA

History and Construction It is a Gravity Dam meaning it is meant to hold water back using its own material, in this case it is cement. It was built to produce hydroelectric power and deliver irrigation water for crops. Construction took 11 years from 1933-1942

Effects of the dam on the Spokan people At first the Spokan people weren’t told how the dam was going to affect their lifestyle. The dam removed 1100 miles of natural salmon spawning water The dam damaged the migration pattern of the salmon The dam abruptly ended a way of life that had sustained the Spokan People for over thousands of years Grand Coulee hurt fishing production Blocked the annual migration of salmon, a food resource relied on for at least 5,000 years
