Presentation transcript:

Welcome to English! Ms. Tigner Room 204

General Objectives You will be learning the appropriate English and Language Arts State Standards for your grade. You will read selections from the textbook and do some outside reading and research as well. Writing is a huge component of the curriculum. You will explore many genres throughout the year. Expect to write a lot! You will present to small groups and / or the whole class from time to time.

Attendance and Tardiness I will follow the school policies. Attendance, behavior, and tardiness can affect your grade because you miss material! “U”s in citizenship can make you ineligible for any and all extra-curricular activities, including clubs.

Tardiness I expect you to be ready to work when the tardy bell rings. It is your responsibility to be in class on time. If you miss work by being tardy, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.

You are responsible to have these items with you every day in class. At least two pencils and/or pens (blue or black ink for all class work). Paper (filler paper – college ruled- in 3 ring binder and the spiral notebook that is for this class ONLY. Index cards – 3x5 – needed every week.

Highly recommended Hole punch Stapler (at home & with you) Computer, printer, and computer paper (at home) Extra ink cartridge (at home)

Classroom Rules NO food or drink is allowed in the classroom. NO grooming in the classroom. NO hats or hoods on in the classroom. (QHHS hats only on campus)

Classroom Rules (Continued) Raise your hand to speak or be out of your seat. No gum allowed in the classroom. No electronics unless specified. No sleeping. No throwing or littering.

Talking in Class First and foremost, the classroom is a place for learning. Often we will talk while we learn. There will be cooperative activities where you will communicate and share your ideas. At other times, I will expect you to be seated, quiet, and attentive. When someone is talking or while you are working individually, you should not be talking or being disruptive in any way. Respect for me and all other students is a requirement.

Respect in the Classroom Respect means treating all people and property as you should. All teacher areas, materials and property are off limits unless you have asked permission from me. Everyone deserves respect. Take responsibility for yourself. Your behavior, good or bad, is yours and yours alone.

Entering Class Entering class should be done quietly and in an orderly fashion. Go directly to your seats and get out the materials needed for the day. If you do not know what is needed, sit quietly and wait for instructions from me. Most days there will be an assignment on the board or the projector screen. Start working on this as soon as possible.

Passes Generally, I expect my students to stay in class from bell to bell. I allow up to two passes per quarter unless there is a medical exception filed in the office. Unused passes will earn you extra credit. I want to be sensitive to the needs of my students. If the situation dictates, and a true emergency is evident, I may show some flexibility. This will be at my discretion only.

Work Standards Late work is accepted up to one week late for half credit, or full credit with an NQA. Work will have the proper heading in the upper right hand corner that must include the first and last name, date, and period. ALL work must have a title – and that will generally be given to you. Work will be neat, free of wrinkles, folds, spiral edge, or tears. It must be in pencil OR standard blue or black pen unless I tell you otherwise. ALL work must be your own. Work that is copied will result in a zero for both the person who copied and the person who allowed the copying to be done. All of these standards must be in place to receive credit.

Testing and Cheating Follow all rules regarding testing and other assignments in my classes. Eyes on your own paper. Desks clear of everything except testing or other necessary materials. No talking while any test paper is out. Stay in your seat. Keep your work private. Bring something to read for after the test. No electronics.

Cheating Consequences A zero on the assignment Parent notification (a CHT will show as the grade in PowerSchool.) Reduction in Citizenship grade. You may also receive a Saturday Work assignment.

Cleaning Up Cleaning up is a quick and easy thing we are all going to be a part of. Desks need to be in the appropriate place and lined up properly. . The floor will be free of debris and clean. All materials will be put away and neat.

Dismissal The bell is a reminder. It does not dismiss you. Stay in your seats until directed by me to leave the room. When dismissed, leave quietly and in an orderly manner. When you leave, your area will be neat and clean. All materials will be put where they belong. Passing periods are seven minutes long, so proceed quickly to your next class.

Emergency Drills We have emergency drills because some day, there may be an actual emergency, and we will all need to be prepared for safety reasons. When the alarm sounds be quiet and wait for instructions. Leave everything where it is. You can get it later. Stay with the class at all times so you can be accounted for. When the drill is over, return immediately to the room so your attendance can be verified.

Consequences Consequences are a necessary part of any government. A classroom is no exception. I generally issue warnings for minor offences, and first offences. After School Work (ASW) is for more major offences or repeat offenders. Behavior that does not change with a reminder can result in suspension from the classroom. (Violation for electronic devices warrants a Saturday Work assignment.) I will use steps when behaviors persist, or when disruption or defiance is involved. If you receive a referral, any assignment that is in progress will receive a zero.

Thank you for your attention! I know we will have a great and productive year in English. I look forward to working with each of you, and hope that we can learn a great deal from each other. I know you have been given a lot of information in this presentation, but I am confident that you are good students and that you will succeed in class this year. For your convenience, I will post this on the class web site. http://moodle.avhsd.org
