Characteristics of Life

1. All living organisms are made of cells.

Two types: Prokaryotic –no nucleus Eukaryotic-has a nucleus

2. All living things reproduce. Asexually- one parent Sexually-two parents Two Cells One Cell

3. All living things grow & develop. Change in size, shape and structure

4. All living things respond to the environment. A stimulus causes a response Ex. Self-defense, survival Including homeostasis Maintaining internal conditions Ex. Temperature, water

5. All living things obtain and use energy which is called metabolism.

Are dead things non-living?

Living things can be alive or dead. Non-living things do NOT meet ALL the characteristics of life, and therefore, they are not considered alive or dead.
