The Oregon Trail Approximately 2,200 miles long starting from Independence, Missouri. Later other trails were created to further travel in other directions. Travelers were inspired by dreams of gold and new farmland. The trail was created by fur trappers and traders. Later improvements to the trails would be better roads, ferries, bridges, and cut outs for mountains. The trails were used by an estimated 350,000 settlers. However, when railroads were completed then the need for trails was lessened.
