The Government Government Levels The British Government tries to help UK businesses succeed It sets the legal framework for all businesses (laws, regulations) Businesses need to know the current market and change/adapt as necessary The Government works through different layers, each effecting business differently

The European Union Government Government Levels The European Union Government There are 27 ‘member states’ Decisions at EU level are made by the European Commission, Council of Ministers and the European Parliament These are the 3 main EU decision making bodies The member states have given the decision making bodies in the EU powers to pass laws and make decisions that affect businesses in every EU country

The European Union Government Levels The EU Government protects the internal market by allowing EU businesses to trade across borders without any restrictions British businesses have access to over 500 million consumers without import/export regulations EU businesses benefit from product standardisation as products can be sold all over Europe without being changed or adapted Examples of product standardisation are: CIF – previously sold in UK as JIF Oil of Olay – previously sold in UK as Ulay

The UK National Government Government Levels The UK National Government The Government makes laws that apply to everyone in UK, including what businesses can or can’t do The Laws must abide by EU guidelines on agreed areas (employment rights, product safety, competition) The Government tries to attract foreign companies into the UK (Nissan, Ford etc) In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland there are regional assemblies that also make important decisions that only affect business in those countries

The UK National Government Government Levels The UK National Government Government aims to create “sound and stable” economy (financial situation of country) They push for “continued growth” to ensure future jobs and successful businesses They encourage new businesses/entrepreneurs to start and grow in UK

Local Government Government Levels Every area in the UK has a local council City/county councils cover large areas District/borough covers smaller communities All councils have an economic development plan so their area can prosper

Local Government Government Levels Local Government aims to encourage new businesses to area or relocate established ones They give advice about grants They offer incentives Local Government have legal powers to take certain actions for benefit of community It is funded from central government, local council tax payers, council owned properties and business rates in area
