Open Access Textbooks Are You Ready? Dr. Joan Wagner June 10, 2019

Taking Stock Who has used Open Access Textbooks? What did you like about them? What would you like to see done differently? Have you thought about writing your own Open Access textbook?

What is Open Access or OER? "OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.“ - William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

Why OER? “In the past three decades, the costs of textbooks have risen some 834%; that is more than double the rate of increase in house prices and triple the cost increases in the Consumer Price Index.” CBC. (2014). “Textbook Prices That Break the Bank.” University textbooks/course materials estimates: U Regina: $1000-$3000 U Sask: $1000-$2000 U Alberta: $1750 UBC: $1700 Queens: $1100 York: $1000-$1500

What’s a student to do? Pay for the textbook Purchase an older edition of the textbook Delay purchasing the textbook Never purchase the textbook Share textbook costs with a group of students (“part- time” access) Borrow the textbook through the URSU-Library Textbook Program Elsa
