Lesson 4: Tackling the Global Goal “No Poverty”

In the UK the minimum wage for a person who is 25+ is £7.83. This means that they must earn at least £7.83 an hour for the work that they do. Nearly 1/2 of the world's population live on less than £2 a day. 1.3 billion of those people live in extreme poverty: less than £1 a day. 1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty. According to UNICEF 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. Poverty in Scotland has increased. Approximately 180, 000 children (19%) live in poverty.

What is common and what is necessary? Sort each of these boxes into two categories “common” and “necessary”. Then rank your “common” cards in order from “essential” to “not that important”.

Hyderabad, India Population: 6.81 million An equal city? What reasons can you think of to explain the differences between the Old City and the Hi-tech City? Hyderabad, India Population: 6.81 million An equal city?

Scotland: Population: 5.37 million An equal country?

In your jotters: Think about the things that are common and necessary: How would you feel if you didn’t have these things? Would you share how you feel with your friends? Why might some people try to hide that they are poor? Is this right?
