A Model for the Sustainable Expansion of Global Family Medicine Talia Helman, Zach Helm, and Dr. Judith Simms-Cendan Medical Students Providing Across Continents (MedPACt), UCF College of Medicine Relationship with UCF Lasting global impact starts with strong workable relationships. UCF COM has developed a sound workable relationship with the Yantaló Clinic in Peru through trust, respect and active communication. The cornerstone of success for UCF’s global health initiatives and the Yantaló Clinic’s long term viability are year-long planning, communication, and enthusiasm for improvement by both organizations. -Student and faculty planning -Interprofessional service learning -Multi-institutional involvement -Private funding Education Rising second and fourth year medical students were given the opportunity to have hands on experience. Students were expected to: -Create differential diagnosis -Educate patients -Analyse laboratory data -Utilize limited medications -Maintain supply inventory -Organize trip logistics Future Plans -Working with the local medical school -Establishing relationships with local Peruvian hospitals and institutions within the United States for sustainable care -Find a sustainable beneficiary Family Medicine Physicians The Family Medicine physicians at the Yantaló Clinic care for their patients year round and their style is particularly well-suited for population health, the Yantaló Clinic, and global health. -Pre-op workups -Screening of preventable diseases and routine lab work -Coordination for specialty procedures and imaging -Family communication and routine follow up -Cultural competency Sustainability The Yantaló Clinic is founded on the idea of providing the highest quality care to patients with limited to no access. Full-time Family Medicine physicians at the Yantaló Clinic are key to the sustainability of the clinic and quality of care for each individual patient. The care given by these family physicians is subsidized by international specialty teams to provide more extensive services. -Continuity of care -Capacity building by international partners -Comprehensive facilities -Free care and medications -Management of preventable diseases -Maintenance of sustained diseases Acknowledgements Thank you to the Yantaló Clinic for allowing us to be a part of their mission, especially Dr. Luis Vasquez, MD., Mary Vasquez, PhD., Roberto Vasquez, PhD., Mario Vasquez, MS. and Ian Vasquez MS who started the Yantalo Peru Foundation. As well as UCF COM and Dr. Judith Simms-Cendan for her guidance, encouragement, and support. 1
