Six Basic Nutrient in human diet Carbohydrates Fats Proteins Vitamins Minerals Water

The three major food types Carbohydrates Fats (also known as lipids) Proteins

Carbohydrates Major source of energy for your body Two main forms: Sugars Starches http://www.public.iastate.edu/~pkeeling/Starches.jpg http://faeriesfinest.com/images/products/sugars.jpg

Sugars Monosaccharides Disaccharides Glucose, Fructose, Galactose Maltose, sucrose, lactose

Monosaccharides Commonly called “simple sugars” Glucose – the ONLY ONE that can be immediately used by your body! Fructose (often found in fruit) – must be further digested and broken down before use.

Disaccharides Must be broken down into monosaccharides before they can be used. Sucrose (table sugar) – must be broken down further for the body to use as energy. http://www.jenniferthornberry.com/uploaded_images/sugar-788858.jpg

Disaccharides Lactose – sugars found in milk. http://www.dairyafrica.com/images/agda_07_riverina_milk%2012.jpg http://www.biotechlearn.org.nz/var/biotechlearn/storage/images/themes/food_intolerance_and_allergies/images/lactose_free_milk/186918-1-eng-AU/lactose_free_milk_large.jpg

Starches Polysaccharides Starches are long chains of sugars that are chemically bonded. Found in grains, legumes (beans with pods), and root vegetables.

Starch Samples http://www.public.iastate.edu/~pkeeling/Starches.jpg

Starches Must be broken down into simple sugars to be absorbed and used by the body.
