Differences between Reception and Year 1  The children’s day is more structured with a distinct separation between play and learning.  Children’s learning is compartmentalised into clear subjects.  Children are expected to sit for longer periods.  Children have less choice in deciding how they learn.  No continuous provision for outdoor learning.

Reading Apply phonic knowledge and skills to decode words. Read accurately by blending sounds in unfamiliar words. Recognise and join in with predictable phrases when sharing a story. Relate reading to own experiences. Re-read if reading does not make sense. Re-tell with considerable accuracy. Discuss significance of title and events. Make predictions on basis of what has been read. Make inferences on basis of what is being said and done. Read aloud with pace and expression, i.e. pause at full stop; raise voice for question. Recognise: capital letters full stops question marks exclamation marks Know why the writer has used the above punctuation in a text. Know difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. Mrs Aktas

Writing Write clearly demarcated sentences. Use ‘and’ to join ideas. Use conjunctions to join sentences (e.g. so, but). Use standard forms of verbs (e.g. go/went). Introduce use of: capital letters full stops question marks exclamation marks Use capital letters for names and the personal pronoun ‘I’. Write a sequence of sentences to form a short narrative [as introduction to paragraphs]. Use correct formation of lower case letters – finishing in right place. Use correct formation of capital letters. Use correct formation of digits. Spell common exception words and the days of the week. Use the prefix ‘un’ and understand how it changes the meaning of verbs and nouns, e.g. unkind, undoing. Use the spelling rule for adding ‘s’ or ‘es’ to indicate plural nouns.

Mathematics Count to and across 100, forwards & backwards from any number. Read and write numbers to 20 in numerals & words. Read and write numbers to 100 in numerals. Say 1 more/1 less to 100. Count in multiples of 2, 5 & 10. Use bonds and subtraction facts to 20. Add & subtract: o 1-digit & 2-digit numbers to 20, including zero. Solve one-step multiplication and division using objects, pictorial representation and arrays. Recognise half and quarter of an object, a shape or a quantity. Sequence events in chronological order. Use language of day, week, month and year. Tell time to hour & half past. Measure and begin to record length, mass, weight, capacity, volume. Recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes. Know common 2-D and 3-D shapes.

What can you do to support your child at home? English Practice forming letters correctly. Ensure your child revises for spelling test. Encourage children to write at home about a topic of their choice. Read to your child as well as listening to them read. Ask questions about what they have read and about unfamiliar(or at times familiar) vocabulary. Expose children to a range of text not just those which are sent home. E.g. magazines, comics, paper, cereal box, recipe books etc. Reading should be enjoyable! Maths Look for numbers and shapes in your environment e.g. door numbers, buses. For shapes- windows, Cereal box, tissue box etc. Count objects in a number of ways e.g in 2’s or 5 (socks, large number of objects) Practice writing the days of the week and months of the year. Encourage your child to read the clock at home. Allow your child to count the coins/notes in your purse/wallet. Can they select the correct coins to pay for an item? Sophie

Phonics Screening- Year 1- Summer Term There will be a strong focus on Phonics and Reading throughout Year 1. We will follow the Letters and sounds scheme to provide a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. The new National Curriculum emphasises the importance of children learning to read using a phonics based approach. Children will learn the phonetic sounds to help them blend and read the words. Teaching them the right phonics skills will ensure they become successful readers and make them feel confident when taking the Phonics Screening Test at the end of Year 1. There will be more information and workshops throughout the year. Ms Brown

Final Notes Homework/Spellings- Given out Thursday due back following Wednesday at the latest. Book changes – Minimum of once per week. Ensure children understand what they are reading. Please write names on ALL items of clothing including P.E kits. No laces on shoes unless children are able to tie them themselves. Bags suitable for the age of children. Read newsletters and check emails for further information about topics, trips and key dates. Please register your interest with the office if you wish to support on trips. Please arrange a suitable time with your class teacher should you need to discuss important matters. Mrs B-R
