Class Discussion A Tariff is a tax or duty that you pay on certain items that you import or export. This is used as a way to regulate trade and encourage domestic, or local, industry. What does this ACTUALLY mean? Does this sound like a good or bad idea? Why?

Bell Ringer Video: How does the United States benefit from trade? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHib0Jm-f1w Watch the Video and answer the questions on your sheet. This video is from a conservative news source that usually represents Republican views. This particular clip is focusing on why tariffs have been used in the past and how they impacted the US in positive ways. There are negative impacts as well and we will discuss them later in the lesson.

Article Read the article and answer the questions on your learning guide.

Trade Wars The United States is currently in a trade war with China. We are going to look and see how the current trade disagreements are impacting the United States. You have a list of each state in front of you and a list of the current items that are being taxed as well as the top producing states of those goods. You need to write the appropriate items next to each state and decide if the tariffs are heavily impacting those states or if it is a low impact.

Trade Wars Now look at the map and color each state that voted for Donald Trump red and each state that voted for Hilary Clinton blue.

Trade Wars Do Republican or Democratic leaning states seem to be sharing the impact of tariffs? Why do you think that is? How can this cause conflict among Americans/political parties? How can this cause conflict abroad?

Exit Slip Who does tariffs affect the most? What does “exchange rate” refer to? What is a trade deficit?
