Panel Antenna Simulation Results Design Test Results 2011 – 2012 Capstone Senior Design Problem Statement Project Goal SEL needs an antenna that is cost-effective to manufacture for use with the SEL-3031 Serial Radio Transceiver. The antenna should perform similarly to antennas that are currently supplied by outside sources. The goal of the project was to design a panel antenna that: -Operates in the 900-930 MHz frequency band -Has directional radiation characteristics -is constructed using printed circuit board technology Simulation Results Design Test Results Far Field Radiation Patterns 3-Dimensional Directional Bowtie Antenna FR-4 Substrate Backplate Spacing = 83 mm Far Field Radiation Pattern Gain ~ 6 dBi 3 dB Beamwidth ~ 65 degrees Horizontal Plane Horizontal Plane Side Lobes Main Lobe Back Lobe Main Lobe Problem Solution Advisors: Dr. Greg Donohoe and Dr. Touraj Assefi Sponsors: Henry Loehner and Eric Sagen seniordesign.engr.uidaho.edu/2011-2012/panelantenna The directional bowtie antenna was chosen as the final design due to its directionality and ease of manufacturability. The team recommends that an array of two or four bowtie elements be investigated for improved directionality, as well as methods to match the input impedance to 50 Ohms. The production design should be characterized by a professional antenna laboratory. Carlos Gonzalez, Cooper McBride, and Allan Davis
