The Life Of Christ Lesson 9 The First Parables of Jesus Luke 12:1-59 - Jesus taught in parables July 24, 2019

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 Don’t worry about temporal life. (verses 22-30) Seek God’s (spiritual) kingdom. (verses 31-32) Use your blessings as God intended. (verse 33) Determine your “treasure.” (verse 34) Be ready when our soul is “required.” (verses 35-40) Understand Jesus is talking to you! (verses 41-48) Choose your loyalty. (verses 49-53) Pay attention! (verses 54-56) Respect God’s judgment. (verses 57-59) Make wise investments. He could not secure his own life. The Macedonians fit the latter model in that they did not allow their personal deprivation to limit their willingness to give and their giving. Perhaps their own deep [extreme] poverty had created in them a greater sympathy for the needs of others.

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 4 stewards referred to: (verses 41-48). The faithful and sensible steward who’s found “so doing” when his Master comes.(verses 42-44) Sustain and grow our faith and endurance. Luke 17:5; 2 Thessalonians 1:3; Philippians 1:25; Colossians 2:5 One who puts off his master’s return (2 Peter 3; Amos 6:3) and walks according to the flesh (Galatians 5:16ff). (verses 45-46) Don’t put it off (2 Peter 3; Amos 6:3), get sober (1 Corinthians 15:34; 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8), and “walk no longer” (Ephesians 4:17) Anyone desiring to be “faithful and sensible” (wise; ASV, ESV - meaning “practical skill/acumen” Strong) (wise; ASV, ESV - meaning “practical skill/acumen” Strong)

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 4 stewards referred to: (verses 41-48). One who knew what to do and didn’t do it. (Matthew 7:24-27)(verse 47) “Get ready” and don’t assume there’s another day. (James 4:13-17). Don’t “delay”! (Acts 22:16) The ignorant and untaught. (Acts 17:23, 30; (verse 48) Study and learn. (2 Timothy 2:15) Anyone desiring to be “faithful and sensible” (wise; ASV, ESV - meaning “practical skill/acumen” Strong) (wise; ASV, ESV - meaning “practical skill/acumen” Strong)

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 Choose your loyalty. (verses 49-53) Christ over family. (Matthew 10:34-39; Luke 14:26) Suffering over comfort (Luke 16:25) Later over now (Hebrews 11:24-26) Faith over sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) Make wise investments. He could not secure his own life. The Macedonians fit the latter model in that they did not allow their personal deprivation to limit their willingness to give and their giving. Perhaps their own deep [extreme] poverty had created in them a greater sympathy for the needs of others.

Rather than being the “fool” … - Luke 12:22-59 Pay attention! (verses 54-56) Specifically, re: the coming of the kingdom and Messiah. To God’s word to see the prophetic word made more sure. (2 Peter 1:19ff; Hebrews 2:1) Respect divine judgment while we have time. (verses 57-59) 2 Corinthians 5:9-11; Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 Psalms 143:1-2 - do not enter into judgment.

Parable Of The Barren Fig Tree - Luke 13:1-9 Call to repentance: (verses 1-5) “On the same occasion,” Jesus told of Galileans “whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices” and those “on whom the tower of Siloam fell and killed them.” Jesus asks if they thought their sins had brought this fate upon them. (cf. John 9:1-2; Job 4:7-9) They saw the sins of those who perished so clearly, but failed to see their own (Matthew 7:3-5). Jesus teaches “Unless YOU repent, you will all likewise perish.” How did Pilate and the Jews regard the “Galileans”? There were terrible atrocities brought against the Jews by the Romans during the decade-long governorship of Pilate. However, no specific event presently known from secular historians describes the time and circumstances of this incident.

Parable Of The Barren Fig Tree - Luke 13:1-9 In Luke 13, those who were present were more focused on the supposed sinfulness of these Galileans than they were on themselves. (John 21:21) While Jesus sought to turn their attention to their own need as a Jewish nation to repent and bear fruit … It is to be our purpose in studying this parable to turn our attention to our own spiritual condition before God.
