Ch 10 - 2 - 2 Feudalism

How did increased trade change life in medieval Europe? EQ How did increased trade change life in medieval Europe?

Towns & Cities Trade declined when the Roman Empire fell. Roads and bridges fell into ruin, law and order  disappeared.  1100’s Europe safer, more goods and food.  Population increased. Nobles seek luxury items from the East.         (Silk & Spices)

Wealthy Trading Centers Cities grew wealthy. Venice, Pisa & Genoa built fleets. Controlled the Mediterranean trade.  Flanders (Belgium) trade center of the North. (Wool) Trade fairs – Fur, tin, honey & wool. Silk, sugar & spices  Merchants wanted gold & silver – banks opened.

Government in Cities Cities and trade created a middle class. Merchants, Bankers, and Artisans. Men were citizens, set-up city councils with officials to make laws and judges. Nobles often owned the territory of the city and taxed the townspeople. Townspeople wanted freedom.

What did Guilds do? Craftspeople organized into guilds (groups). Guilds set prices & quality standards. An apprentice would work for a Master Artisan.

Life in a Medieval City Cities were surrounded by stone walls. Candles and fire were used for heat and light. Smoke and ash in the air. Open sewers. Unhealthy. Women kept the house and cared for the children.
