CHALLENGE POVERTY WEEK 7 -13 October 2019 Lesson plan : Upper primary

Learning intentions: We are learning to understand that some people in Scotland have less than others. We are learning to understand what it is like to have less than others. We are learning to understand the importance of treating others with kindness.

UNCRC Article 2: You have the right to protection against discrimination. This means that nobody can treat you badly because of your colour, sex or religion, if you speak another language, have a disability, or are rich or poor. Article 26: You have the right to help from the government if you are poor or in need. Article 27: You have the right to a good enough standard of living. This means you should have food, clothes and a place to live.

What do you need to be happy?

Statement corners Listen to each statement then go to the appropriate corner of the room depending on whether you agree with the statement, disagree or don’t know. Be ready to say why.

Challenge Poverty Week: Activity In partners, prepare a PowerPoint presentation on the subject of child poverty.

Challenge Poverty Week: Activity The rest of the class will look forward to seeing your PowerPoint with lots of great information, pictures, statistics, maps and facts. However, you also need to present your research by talking and explaining your findings alongside your PowerPoint. Let’s think about how you should present your findings....

Presenting tips Look at your audience. Speak slowly, clearly and loudly. Use notes and bullet points, but do not read everything (Do not read off the whiteboard!) Use expression when talking and keep your volume up. Make eye contact with your audience. Rehearse your speech. Then rehearse some more. Make sure everyone knows WHAT they have to say and WHEN they have to say it.
