Film Clip Friday: Literary Element SEE HEAR FEEL BELIEVE Create a chart like this one Schindler’s List (1993) Questions: Why is the coat red and everything else black and white? Why does the director use primarily a long shot? JUXTAPOSITION and SYMBOLISM

Lit Terms Definition Symbolism - an object representing another to give it an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant. Bald eagle symbolizes….? Red color or red rose symbolizes…? Four Seasons in writing symbolize…? “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players;” (Shakespeare)

Juxtaposition – two unlike ideas placed side by side Why? To highlight the differences between them; point out irony Examples: Lion looking fearful of a mouse Image of a grandmother holding a baby A child’s tricycle in front of a tank “Yeah, yeah, I’ma up at Brooklyn, now I’m down in Tribeca Right next to De Niro, but I’ll be hood forever” – Jay-Z, “Empire State of Mind”
