History of University

RUFA was first called “School of Cambodian Arts” and created by George Groslier (1887-1945) under the royal order of King Sisowath dated on the 14th of December 1917 which offered the subject of Arts and Culture.

18 January 1965 The RUFA was formed under leadership of Preahbat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk and offered the instruction in the subject of Arts and Culture. From 1965 to 1975, the RUFA trained the higher education students in major of Archeology, Architecture and Urbanism, Interior Design, Painting and Sculpture. 1975-1979 The RUFA was entirely closed down under the Democratic Kampuchea (Pol Pot regime). During that period, the buildings, materials, study suppliers and libraries were destroyed. 9 May 1980 School of Arts was reopened the institution as secondary school. There were five skill-based School of Arts including Plastic Arts, Drama, Dance, Circus, and the school of Music.

History of the university 5 OCTOBER 1988 The School of Arts was renamed into the University of Fine Arts by the new two faculties were formed, Archaeology and Architecture. The old five school were merged into the three faculties: Fine Arts, Choreographic Arts, Music. 14 OCTOBE 1996 The university of Fine Arts was changed into the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) by the Sub-decree No. 62 អនក្រ.​បក. 23 JUNE 2003 Under Sub-decree No.52 អនក្រ.បក that created the Royal University of Fine Arts as Administrative Public Institution.

Rufa Mission and objective To train young generations of artists, architects and archaeologists. To conduct research in culture and arts field in order to expanse the knowledge in new exploration and modern technology. mission To participate in the preservation of various forms and expressions of Khmer culture and arts. To oversee cultural experts using their skills in social work and participate in the development of the country. objective
