Safety in the Science Lab What you need to know before working in the lab.

Safety First!! Because the apparatus and chemicals used in a high school science lab can be dangerous, it is important that you know some basic rules of safety before you begin or ….

If you find that Rule #1 is hard to follow… Use common sense. If you find that Rule #1 is hard to follow… Make sure you listen to the teacher’s instructions, read the instructions in the text, and follow them.

Personal Safety Wear goggles and an apron when ever you are using chemicals, or hot liquids, or solids. Use gloves as the chemicals may be corrosive. Tie long hair back when using burners. Let the teacher know if you wear contact lenses as you may be asked to wear glasses for some experiments.

Personal Safety (cont.) Do not perform any experiments unless the teacher has approved them. Do not move faster than a walk in the lab. Do not make any sudden movements (there may be people behind you with hot liquids or corrosive chemicals).

Personal Safety (cont.) Keep your area neat and tidy. Don’t let objects hang over the edge of the table. Move all unnecessary books and binders to an unused area.

Reflection Page Without looking back, list two items of personal safety that stand out as being very important.

Burner Safety Always wear safety glasses when using a burner. Tie back long hair and do not wear loose clothing so that they do not fall over the flame. Do not leave flame unattended. Never reach across the flame.

Burner Safety (cont.) Point test tubes away from people when you are heating fluids. Do not heat materials unless instructed to do so. Do not heat anything in a closed container. Be careful when removing objects after heating ------ they may be still hot.

Safety with Chemicals Do not touch or taste any chemical unless instructed to do so. To smell something hold it away from your nose and use your hand to waft the vapor towards you. If you get a chemical spill on your skin, wash the area with plenty of water.

Safety with Chemicals (cont.) Do not return unused chemical to the storage bottle. Follow the teachers directions for leftover chemicals. Do not dispose of chemicals down the sink unless the teacher says it is OK. Never mix any chemicals unless you have been instructed to do so. Wash your hands before leaving lab.

Reflection Page Without looking back, simply list two safety rules dealing with burners and two with chemical safety.

Safety with Glassware Never use chipped or broken glass. Report such glass to the teacher. Dispose of broken glass in the broken glass container. Use a broom and dustpan to pick up broken glass. Clean all glassware before putting it away.

Using Safety Equipment Know the location of all the safety equipment in the lab. Fire extinguisher. Eye wash. First Aid Kit. If you get a spill into your eye, rinse with the eye wash for 15 minutes.

Using Safety Equipment (cont.) If someone is on fire, stop them from running (stop, drop, & roll). When using the fire extinguisher, break the seal and aim at the base of the fire.

Your assignment. Individually, create an advertisement for safety in the laboratory. This may be in the form of a poster, comic strip, video, or ????? Your advertisement must cover at least five of the safety rules covered in this PowerPoint. This Project may be done with a partner or individually. The deadline for this project is Monday, Sept. 2 The rubric will be posted on Moodle.
