Disability Service - What is our role? We provide academic related advice, support and guidance to disabled students, university departments and services. We are the University experts, we are passionate about inclusion, and being accessible. As part of the university we want you to get the most out of your time at Leeds.

How will we work with you? You will need to: ‘Sign Up’ with our service Provide suitable* evidence We will: review your information identify support / changes in your support make recommendations to department We can support you at every step! Front of House Advisory Team Sign up form= essential. What do you want to tell us about your disability? How do you want us to use your information? GDPR. Evidence= there are requirements for evidence. Medical evidence must give a diagnosis, or working diagnosis, and confirm a condition is ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ Full diagnostic assessments conducted by Ed Psych/ Specialist Teachers. Not screenings, form 8s or letters from school confirming exam arrangements Support Summary Sheet created by DAT
What support is available? Academic Support Recommendations and Adjustments: Exam and assessment; Teaching and learning (e.g. lecture materials in advance); Some loan equipment; Non medical helper support (e.g. library, note taking, mobility); Transcription services (accessible documents); You might access support from other departments too such as: accommodation, libraries, student union, funding…. We can help direct you to the right team! Other support can be identified in your one to one sessions. Tailored to your needs

Reasonable Adjustments The recommendations we make to school are called ‘reasonable adjustments’ These can include changes to the: physical environment; ways things are done; provision of additional aids or services designed to remove barriers you may experience as a direct result of disability. These cannot exempt a student from meeting the core criteria of a course, or facilitate an unfair advantage. Reasonable Adjustments must also be…Reasonable.
Our Relationship with your Department Every department is different Our Advisory Team has Disability Co-ordinators who are linked to specific departments; Each department also has a Disability Contact, a school based member of staff who we liaise with; Throughout the year we will work with you and your Disability Contact, to address any specific arrangements or issues with your support.

Services you might access include: Students’ Union Advice Centre Student Funding Team Study Abroad Office School Student Support Office in your department Chaplaincy Accommodation Wardens Student Counselling and Wellbeing Chaplaincy- non denominational. Quiet space, opp to chat to someone. Student Counselling is separate from us – we don’t share information. Good idea to also register with them.
