The John Muir Award The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on the natural environment. It promotes educational, social and personal development through engagement with wild places and involvement in conservation. Jamie

The John Muir Award To achieve the John Muir Award, pupils must meet the four Challenges: Discover a wild place Explore it Conserve it Share the experiences Show enthusiasm and commitment Have an awareness of who John Muir was Understand what the John Muir Award is and why they are participating Jamie

Weekly Organisation All 145 Primary 5 pupils will be split into four groups: Group A, Group B, Group C or Group D Provides valuable opportunities for pupils to mix with each other, to make new friendships and to prepare for the transition to Dunbar Grammar School Pupils have chosen friends they would like to be with and we have used this to create the groups and make dormitory plans Jamie

Weekly Organisation Across the week, each group will: Spend one day and night at the Innerwick Outdoor Centre Spend two days in school and in the local area learning about John Muir, conservation and our local community, this includes visits to Spott Church Spend one day at the Whiteadder with outdoor education instructors, including a water based activity, hill walking and problem solving tasks Jamie

Innerwick Centre Innerwick Residential Centre was established to promote field-work and outdoor activities in the East Lothian countryside It’s perfectly located for exploring East Lothian Recently refurbished and the centre is  unstaffed self-catering Jamie

Staffing at Innerwick Each group of children will have at least 4 adults with them If there are any additional Health/Support Needs there may be extra adults Class teachers, Auxiliaries and other volunteers are all PVG checked Helen

Food throughout the week A packed lunch is required each day Please inform your child’s class teacher of any allergies, particularly relating to food Special dietary requirements can be catered for, please let your child’s teacher know as this will need to be discussed with Ruby in the kitchen prior to going We will never let any child go hungry so please don’t worry if you have a very fussy eater, sometimes the power of peers helps when choosing to try something you would never try at home! Weekly Kit List Outdoor clothes with a spare set throughout the week For the night at Innerwick: Yes - bring a favourite teddy Yes – bring a book to read No - electronic games or mobile phones No other food or drinks or sweets required Helen

Medication If your child is on medication we will need full details and it will be administered and recorded, as are any accidents/illnesses We encourage children to bring lip balm and a sun hat since they are outdoors most of the day Bed wetting - please inform your child’s teacher if this an occasional issue, if so, please pack additional clothing Helen

Payment and Costings £10 deposit and permission slip should have been returned The final cost of the visit will be £46 (inclusive of £10 deposit) The final amount must be paid by Friday 10th May 2019 Please can you ensure you have paid by this date as we have to pay in advance for the outdoor education staff, the food and the mini buss hire. School cannot afford to pick up this up If you have any concerns regarding payment please come and see us so we can make individual arrangements Helen
