Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures <http:// ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair <stuart.kerry@philips.com> as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at <patcom@ieee.org>. Huanchun Ye, Atheros, et. al. Syed Aon Mujtaba, Agere Systems, et. al.

March 2005 Abstract There are several issues with having an optional mode with lowest data rate, using SIG-N, STBC This is a particularly critical issue since the only single stream modes that the WWiSE proposal supports are using STBC. (TGn Sync allows spatially spread single stream modes which do not require any modification for a mandatory receiver.) We wanted to bring these to light Huanchun Ye, Atheros, et. al.

November 2004 doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/888r8 March 2005 N-Beacon Optional STBC beacon – increases range for STBC stations, but cannot be understood by devices not implementing this option Mandatory non-STBC beacon - footprint is not increased Having both beacons Adds overhead Can a close-in STBC station get confused? Can it associate to either beacon? Huanchun Ye, Atheros, et. al. Syed Aon Mujtaba, Agere Systems, et. al.

November 2004 doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/888r8 March 2005 NAV Issues Need MAC protection for stations that do not understand STBC packets Adds overhead How to protect normal packets from STBC stations in extra range? Polling? Mandate HCCA? Need MAC protection for polling messages? More overhead Huanchun Ye, Atheros, et. al. Syed Aon Mujtaba, Agere Systems, et. al.

RTS/CTS Protection Do you use STBC for RTS/CTS? November 2004 doc.: IEEE 802.11-04/888r8 March 2005 RTS/CTS Protection Do you use STBC for RTS/CTS? Not understood by non-STBC stations in the same BSS Not understood by non-STBC stations in OBSS Duplicate RTS/CTS using normal and STBC formats? Multiplying overhead Complicated exchange sequences Huanchun Ye, Atheros, et. al. Syed Aon Mujtaba, Agere Systems, et. al.
