Presentation transcript:

EN 13242:2002 This European Standard specifies the properties of aggregates obtained by processing natural or manufactured or recycled materials for hydraulically bound and unbound materials for civil engineering work and road construction. It provides for the evaluation of conformity of the products to this European Standard. Note 1 Aggregates used in construction should comply with all the requirements of this European Standard. As well as familiar and traditional natural and manufactured aggregates Mandate M/125 “Aggregates” included recycled aggregates and some materials from new or unfamiliar sources. Recycled aggregates are included in the standards and new test methods for them are at an advanced stage of preparation. For unfamiliar materials from secondary sources, however, the work on standardisation has only started recently and more time is needed to define clearly the origins and characteristics of these materials. In the meantime such unfamiliar materials when placed on the market as aggregates must comply fully with this standard and national regulations for dangerous substances (see Annex ZA of the standard) depending upon their intended use. Additional characteristics and requirements may be specified on a case basis depending upon experience of use of the product, and defined in specific contractual documents. Note 2 Properties for lightweight aggregates are specified in EN 13055-2.

EN 13285:2003 This European Standard specifies requirements for unbound mixtures used for construction and maintenance of roads, airfields and other trafficked areas. The requirements are defined with appropriate cross-reference to EN 13242. This European Standard applies to unbound mixtures of natural, artificial and recycled aggregates (see annex A) with a upper sieve size (D) from 8 mm to 80 mm and lower sieve size (d) = 0 at the point of delivery. Note 1 Mixtures with an upper sieve (D) greater then 80 mm are not covered by this European Standard but may be specified in the place of use. Note 2 Water content of the mixture and the density of the installed layer are not specified mixture requirements. Both parameters are related to the control of the construction of the layer, and are outside the scope of this European Standard.

EN 13285:2003

Differences in scopes EN 13242 / EN 13285 The EN 13242 scope is much wider than the EN 13285 scope Includes hydraulically and unbound purposes for all civil engincering works and road Construction EN 13242 unlike EN 13285 harmonised – Mandate M 125 by the European Commission

CEN/TC154/Chairman’s Panel, february 2006

Mixtures containing recycled aggregates in EN 13285 Consequently Annex A in EN 13285 ”Description of mixtures containing recycled aggregates” has to be revised.

TC 351 Dangerous substances TC 154 and TC 227 has decided close and common liaison with TC 351. Liaison work is dealt with by: - TC 154 / TG 13 - TC 227 / WG 6

Mandate to unbound mixtures in TC 227 TC 227 plans to ask for an extended mandate 124 to include unbound (and possibly hydraulically bound) mixtures. This will give EN 13285 the same status as EN 13242 and lead to CE-marking of unbound mixtures (new Annex ZA in 13285)

Liaison TC 154 and TC 227 Close liaison between TC 154 / SC4 (aggregates for unbound materials) and TC 227 / WG4 / TG2 (unbound mixtures) necessary to ensure compatibility as to: - Technical requirements - Recycled materials - Dangerous substances - Factory Production Control
