An adverb is a word that modifies or changes the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

* Really tells how wonderful the stories were. Adverbs that modify adjectives or other adverbs usually come directly before the words they modify. The teacher told really wonderful stories. * Really tells how wonderful the stories were.

Many adverbs are formed by adding the suffix –ly to adjectives. Caution: Not all adverbs end in –ly. Not all words ending in –ly are adverbs.

Adverbs can appear in different positions in the sentence. The students boarded the bus eagerly. The students eagerly boarded the bus. Eagerly, the students boarded the bus.
