Welcome to the Departure Zone Andy Lewis UK Contingent Management Team - Travel We took soundings on where you wanted to go. We listened to the feedback from Japan We have maximised the time available outside the jamboree to deliver the best city experience. We have worked hard with local transport companies and accommodation to minimise the time spent travelling despite the large distances involved and limited internal transport links

The Big City Experience Not one City, but two One City on the way to the Jamboree Another City after the Jamboree You can now open your box

Harrisonburg/Morgantown overnight Leaving NYC as late as possible Arriving, getting rooms Breakfast and go To get to the Jamboree, we need to have an overnight stop… and we hope to leave NYC later in the evening and the universities will be a rest stop on the way to the WSJ – as difficult as it may be, the kids need to sleep as the Jamboree will need them at their sharpest!!

Travel to the Jamboree

Peter Wilson UK Contingent Management Team – Post Event Thanks to Andy Travel for the great news about your travel to the USA… now to delve into a bit more detail about your journey and especially the post event. I am the CMT – Peter and the team of Michelle and Vicky have been working closely with TP to plan and arrange post event.

Youth Shaped The main themes from our young people: Sport Sightseeing World Record Festival (social gathering…) A lot of planning has been done based on the pillar of youth shaped and in particular, the Youth Impact team. They have come together to bring the ideas of young people and units. The main themes that have been asked from the young people are as follows…. Sport – sports are a major part of American family life and they spend time together watching a lot of sports. Sightseeing – the all want to see the USA, the famous sights, film locations and museums etc… World Record – this has been requested several times and is something that we are looking into – suggestions on a postcard please. Festival – young people want a gathering, social, food and music

New York City University accommodation for one night Self led adventure Travel cards to get around This is a great extra adventure for you and your units. Due to the unknown timeframes, different university accommodation and time in the city this will be self led and you will get a travel card to aid your travel. An amazing city, with lots of free activities, architecture and monuments. Build this into your next Unit meeting….

Washington D.C. University accommodation for 3 nights Staying at University of Maryland Mixture of free time and planned events This is the main post event experience Three nights at Maryland University Close to the Metro. Close to Washington Centre Travel cards to get around Self led time and some planned events.

Self led free time… UK Contingent map Smithsonian Museums Washington monuments and memorials White House We will provide a contingent map, with places of interest and aa price guide so you can plan your time. Obviously there is the Smithsonian Museum – there are 17 museums or galleries in Washington DC. On the mall there are so many monuments and memorials, the White House and Capitol Hill.

Planned Events UK Contingent evening Memory making Food Music Culture Sport Sunday Activity is to be confirmed Baseball is being investigated UKC are planning an event on an evening for 4000 people. This will be a mixture of all of the above…

Travel in the USA The USA is a huge area…. There will be lots of travel Buses will be the main method Bus in a bag / activities A point about the travel The USA is huge and we MUST travel if we want this to be the best experience, with the most venues and great activities. Prepare your units for long periods on buses. Ideas for ‘bus in a bag’ can be left at the Post Event Workshop.

UK Contingent – Shaped by young people in partnership with adults Youth Engagement update Introduction to the Impact Team video: “Earlier this year we recruited 12 young people from each region and country of the UK, and a Girlguiding rep to be part of the Impact Team – a team using all the ideas and input from young people to help the Contingent Team plan for the Jamboree. “This is their update on what the UK Contingent has done so far in engaging young people to shape their adventure. <video>

Youth Shaped Challenge Award Communicated in October as third set of youth shaped Talking Points Young people plan their own event Validated by CST – at event or via email “Something mentioned in the video was the “Youth Shaped Challenge Award” which was communicated in October as the third set of talking points sent to Unit Leaders. “We are setting Units a challenge for young people in the Unit to plan, prepare and deliver their own training event. We hope to encourage young people to take ownership of their Jamboree preparations, as well as help them to develop skills that will be useful for the Jamboree, and beyond. “If a Unit achieve this goal – they will be awarded the Youth Shaped Challenge <Go transition> - a pin badge for their Jamboree necker. “The challenge can be validated by your CST member being invited to attend the event planned by the young people, or by Unit members sending their testimonies to their CST” “If you’d like to find out more, please visit the Youth Engagement Market Stall later today.”

Skills beyond the Jamboree Online training for young people in January Skills to run youth forums Helpful for Jamboree and local Scouting Great for Personal Development Details sent to Unit Leaders in the coming weeks “In January, we will be hosting three webinars where young people can find out more about running youth forums and how to get the best out of people taking part in Forums. “This will help Participants in the coming months when they are hosting forums about their time in North America. More importantly these webinars will equip them with skills to take back to their local Scouting; beyond the Jamboree. “Exact details will be sent to Unit Leaders in the coming weeks. Young people taking part in something like this could be an excellent Personal Development goal.”

Buddying with USA Contingent UK and USA Unit Buddying Joint resource to help plan At the Jamboree… Agree to share your details with USA Contingent in January data entry “Finally, our most exciting update: “The USA Contingent are providing each UK Unit the opportunity to be buddied with a USA Unit, allowing our young people to get to know an overseas unit ahead of the Jamboree. A joint resource from both Contingents will provide suggested activities and ways of getting to know your buddy Unit. “It is the aim of the USA Team to ensure that UK and USA Units that are buddied together will be placed on the same subcamp at the Jamboree. “Units will be introduced to each other in the new year, via the Leader of each Unit. In order for us to share your email address with the USA Contingent, we will require your permission. This can be given in your next data update in Eventsair. “Again, ff you’d like to find out more, please visit the Youth Engagement Market Stall later today.”
