Presentation transcript:

What’s going on here? What does it look like she’s trying to do? (no clue?) (screaming?) (trying to get your attention?)

She’s actually sounding out a word! Like - can you guys read lips? Right, so you know your mouth moves into different SHAPES for different SOUNDS BUT she’s pressed against glass, which is making her lips distorted.

What about now, can you tell WHAT SOUNDS / words she is trying to make? Is she trying to communicate? (yes) Can we understand her? (no) 1982

What about now, can you understand what she is saying? Does anyone know what language that is? (Japanese?) Can anyone speak Japanese?

Ok, now we have MORE TEXT and this time it’s in ENGLISH Which most of us can understand Let’s ZOOM IN

Let’s read outloud - I’ll start:

Ki-Ko-E-Ma-Su Ka = “CAN YOU HEAR ME?” Can anyone RELATE? Who knows what a COMMINUCATION BARRIER is? no? well… Why did Linda Nishio feel misunderstood? (race, artist) Why couldn’t we understand what she was trying to say at 1st? (foreign language, see but couldn’t hear) What else could be barriers between people? (don’t want to listen, gender, class, age, power…)
